Fidya & Kaffarah

Infaq

Infaq

If you cannot make up missed fasts, Fidya enables you to provide meals for those in need. However, if a fast was intentionally broken, Kaffarah is required—feeding the hungry as a way to seek forgiveness and bring hope.

Fidya & Kaffarah – Making Up for Missed or Broken Fasts

Kaffarah

Kaffarah is required when a fast is broken intentionally without a valid reason, such as eating during Ramadan. To atone, a person must:

  1. Free a slave (if applicable).
  2. If unable, fast continuously for 60 days.
  3. If that is not possible, feed 60 poor people, with a cost of $10 per person, totaling $600 per broken fast.

Kaffarah is also required for breaking an oath or promise in Islam.

Fidya

Fidya applies when a person misses a fast due to a valid reason, such as illness, pregnancy, or old age, and cannot make up for it later. The compensation is $10 AUD per missed fast, amounting to $300 for the full month of Ramadan.

If the person recovers and can fast later, they are encouraged to do so instead of paying Fidya.

The Quran on Fidya & Kaffarah

"Fasting is for a fixed number of days, but if any of you is ill or on a journey, the same number should be made up from other days. And for those who can fast with difficulty, they have a choice: either fast or feed a poor person for each day. But whoever does good willingly, it is better for him. And fasting is better for you if only you knew."
