What is Zakāt?

Who Must Pay Zakāt?
Zakāt is Fard (obligatory) on every adult, sane, free, and debt-free Muslim who possesses nisāb—the minimum amount of wealth—for a full lunar year. This wealth must exceed basic needs and be of a productive nature.
Nisāb – The Minimum Threshold
Zakāt is due if you own:
• Gold: 20 mithqāl (80.18 grams)
• Money & Trade Goods: Equivalent to 80.18 grams of gold
• Livestock:
• 1 sheep per 40 sheep
• 1 sheep per 5 camels
• 1 calf per 30 cattle
• Mines & Precious Stones: Subject to Zakāt
• Farm Produce (Ushr): 10% for naturally irrigated land, 5% for artificially irrigated land
Who Receives Zakāt?
Zakāt must be distributed among the eight categories mentioned in the Qur’ān (Sūrah al-Tawbah, 9:60):
1. The poor (who do not meet the nisāb threshold)
2. The needy (who have nothing)
3. Zakāt administrators
4. Those inclined toward Islām (Muallafah al-Qulūb)
5. People in bondage
6. Those burdened with debts
7. Those striving in the path of Allāh
8. Stranded travelers
Among these, the most deserving are the needy with nothing and those striving in the cause of Allāh.
